Quill Tips — Why THAT Name?

I LOVE research! If you had told me that, back in the dark ages when I had to plow through encyclopedias, reference books and piles of articles to write a research paper, I would have laughed.

It all started when I came across a painting by Concetta Antico. Her unusual use of color intrigued me, so I Googled her. She’s a tetrachromat. What is that? I Googled the word and discovered that super vision (unrelated to supervision) is a real superpower! One link led to another and soon I was lost in worlds I had no idea existed. I was hooked.

My research inspired me to write a four-book Teen/YA SciFi Adventure series, based on the concept of Tetra (meaning ‘four’ when combined with other words) and fueled by my new obsession with research (which is how I knew that about Tetra).

What does that have to do with Quill Tips?  Let’s begin with SeaQuill Writers.

We were excited about starting a co-op of writers helping each other, and we needed a name. Everyone in our local writers group lives near the ocean. Writers use pens, or quills, and seabirds are covered with feathers, each ending in a quill, which they sometimes drop in the sand. We imagined a feathered pen floating in the sea and the name SeaQuill stuck.

Then we decided to start this blog, and I went to my friend Google.

     1. I searched for ‘Sea Quill’ and ‘found Sea Pens.’

     2. Sea pens are marine creatures that resemble feathered pens stuck to the sea floor. (Google ‘sea pen images’ and see how beautiful they are.)

     3. The stories in our brains flow onto paper through the tips of quills or pens. True, we mostly use keyboards nowadays, but there are no sea keyboards. I know. I Googled it.

     4. Tips are also bits of helpful information, which fit right in with our co-op.

     5. And there you have it. ‘Quill Tips.’

I hope you enjoy the Quill Tips our members post here. You may find helpful advice for your own writing and publishing journey. There’s no telling what creative magic our SeaQuill Writers may share with you.
